Whats involved at a CSD Trial?

Competition Scent Dog Trials consists of two types of trial at each level:

During our Trials you will be judged on:

  • Safety

  • Thresholds

  • System

  • Control

  • Indication

  • Working to source

Each trial includes two elements that together form one complete search and will be scored as such. Depending on the venue, these elements may be conducted either continuously or with a short pause between elements.

Speed of search will not play a part in the end results, but you will have a maximum of 20 - 30 minutes to complete your search depending on the trial level and size of search area. The Judge will tell you when you have five minutes remaining.

Pro Trial:

Pro Trials consist of two out of the following four elements:

  1. Building

  2. Vehicle

  3. Area

  4. Route

As only two of these elements will be tested during each Pro Trial it will take you at least two Pro Trials to demonstrate you can achieve a pass score in all four elements.

Alert trial:

With an Alert Trial, you won’t know in advance the elements of search involved. This allows the trial to closely mirror a real-world scenario. You will know in advance the location of the trial and start time. Alert Trials bring a fun element to them as they are generally a scenario based trial. Great skill test of dog and handler.
